How is Matter defined?

Matter is defined as anything that occupies space and can be perceived by one or more senses. This definition encompasses all physical substances, whether they are solids, liquids, or gases. The observable properties of matter—such as color, texture, mass, and volume—are those that can be detected through sensory perception. This makes it a fundamental concept in both physics and chemistry, as it lays the groundwork for understanding the physical world around us.

Other choices provide narrower or incorrect definitions. For example, describing matter solely as a compound of hydrocarbons ignores the vast range of matter that exists, including metals, salts, and various organic compounds beyond hydrocarbons. Similarly, stating that matter is anything broken down to the molecular level or just combinations of molecules and chemicals does not capture its broader definition that includes all substances in the universe.
